Iconic Mexican-American Mural, Victim of Gentrification.

It’s no secret that communities of color are constantly being forced from their homes and their neighborhoods in order to make room for condos and luxury businesses. Gentrification has plagued us for years, and it’s only getting worse in areas like Chicago. To learn about the removal of a decades-old mural that paid tribute to the Mexican-American experience (and also served as an educational tool for those learning about the Chicano Movement) is both sad and infuriating.

Visibility is incredibly crucial, and this particular installation provided a sense of power to those typically underrepresented in society. Thankfully, locals aren’t sitting quietly and are voicing their frustrations with this literal erasure of Latino history.
