Alfonso Gomez Rejon
The Current War
Before even getting the chance to shake his hand and introduce myself, I knew that I’d immediately get along well with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. He was in New York City promoting his latest feature, ‘The Current War: Director’s Cut,’ which I had a chance to screen, that features an all-star cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, and Tom Holland. Although I knew I wanted to talk about his period piece, I was adamant about bringing up our shared connection: the U.S. Mexico border. ‘Fonso’ is a fellow border native (he’s originally from Laredo), and like most of us who hail from that region, he and I spoke the same bi-cultural language that few are fluent in. I made sure to address this and comment on how few from our region get the opportunity to pursue their dreams. Here’s our chat!
