Feliz Navidad

Dear Santa…

I feel like most, if not all, of us, would love it if Santa could bring back normalcy for Christmas. If he could somehow find a way to shove our seemingly easy-going lives from before the pandemic into a reindeer shaped stocking that’s hanging from the mantle. And Lord knows we’ve been staring at that damn mantle every single day since starting quarantine earlier this year.

It hasn’t quite hit me yet just how different the holiday season is this year because I’ve already been conditioned to expect the unexpected. Nothing about 2020 felt right, and so, to me, it only makes sense that Christmas would feel similarly. That being said, I’m reminding myself that the reason for the season remains: to find and feel joy, despite the adversities we have and will continue to face during COVID. Even though I, like a good portion of us, will be physically unable to spend the day of Christmas with my loved ones, it’s the essence behind the holiday that really matters; the love we share that roots us together all year round. That love that will feel equally as powerful the next time we get to sit across from family and friends to celebrate another occasion, free of fear and masks.

And so I hope you find the best way possible to spend this day. Just because 2020 was naughty doesn’t mean you must deprive yourself of everything nice.

Merry Christmas!
