Still Undecided?
No Me Digas. Op-Ed: Keith Price
We are told that most elections are about choosing the lesser of two evils. In 2016, many people had a bad attitude about a certain former First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State running for president versus the draft-dodging, reality TV star with a long history of racist behavior, numerous sexual indiscretions, Russian mob ties, MANY dubious financial dealings, and no government service. Upon some research, I can see how some people find fault in Sec. Clinton, but look at with whom we were left. Even with everything that many of us already knew about the current president before taking office, coupled with the things that we have learned about him and experienced with him since his administration started, many folks will never waiver in their support. There is a sizable amount of our population that is still not sure for whom they will vote.
Who knew that Trump’s most recent “shocking reveal” of the week would be that he actually knew about the severity of COVID-19 and continued to call it a “Democratic hoax”? Or better yet, in less than twenty-four hours he could usurp that news with the news that he allegedly helped a dictator cover up a murder? By the time you read this, there will be more unbelievable and unprecedented things happening with him, and sadly I have a deadline.
We have enough distance now from the conventions. The political parties are vying for the privilege of leading this country into either reclaiming its greatness or watching the work and foresight of this country’s forefathers be dashed to bits by a reality TV clown without an actual political platform. Clearly, you know where my support is going. Admittedly, many differences up and down the political dial are being debated by pundits ad infinitum on broadcast and cable television. The candidates are punching at each other as expected, and with less than 2 months left, many people have already made their decisions on how they are going to vote. Early, and mail-in voting are the prevailing options, even with the Herculean challenges being thrown at them. Despite everything, some people are still undecided.
I will confess that when I opened my eyes on November 9, 2016, I had confusion in my mind and dread in my heart. I truly did not expect to see our country make such a draconian shift. I knew that it would be challenging, but nothing could have prepared me for the actual existence in which we are currently living. With babies being snatched at the borders to an avoidable pandemic situation, and everything in between (including blatant collusion, grift, civil unrest, and borderline treasonous actions), I am trying to understand where the indecision lies for some people. With the violence and legislative insanity that we are currently experiencing, it amazes me that there are people still twisting their lips and asking “Hmm, who should I pick?”
Look at your life right now. Can you honestly say that you are better off now than you were 4 years ago? Unless you are part of the super-wealthy, a straight-up racist, or a perpetual non-conformist or some combination, I find it hard to believe that you can say yes. I also find it hard to believe that anyone in Anytown, USA can say that in our masked, pandemic-riddled, highly unemployed, food insecure, and protesting nation, that they are doing that well. Even the wealthiest people in our country have to admit that they are slightly “inconvenienced” by the current state of affairs. They may be still making money, but they must have had to do their own laundry, clean their own bathrooms, or at the least, microwave their own dinners. Please take a moment of silence for the hardships they must face.
All kidding aside, I own that I have neither patience nor interest to debate anyone else about their uncertainties anymore. There are many issues, in their opinion, that should be discussed now, but those issues have been pushed down the pipeline due to the existential threat that is facing ALL of us. The current commander-in-chief unnecessarily has exposed ALL of us to a contagious virus for political gain. It has now taken over 190,000 lives. Start at that one, and then count backward through the many lies, scandals, injustices, judicial appointments, etc. to his first day in office. If that is still not enough to help you decide which one is the lesser of two evils, then I got a big ball of nothing for you. No tea, no shade. And for his many die-hard supporters (none of whom I suspect are reading this), please Google Rev. Jim Jones, Guyana, and see if there are any similarities with the person you endorse. That will require some deductive reasoning. Good luck.
