The Courtroom
Director Lee Sunday Evans and Actor Kristin Villanueva
Although I talk heavily about the immigration process either through my radio or online work, I have yet to witness an actual deportation proceeding or court appearance… possibly because I’d be an emotional wreck the entire time. I mean, who would want to subject themselves to watching toddlers (in some cases) trying to defend themselves against an oppressive system they have absolutely no idea about. And the most upsetting part is there are few options presented to undocumented immigrants looking for relief or care from, oftentimes, unjust punishment. While many advocates are doing their fair share of work to assist this vulnerable community, a new piece of artistic entertainment is doing its best, as well. The theater collective Waterwell is currently producing a roughly 90-minute play called ‘The Courtroom’ that brings a recent US immigration court proceeding to life with the help of local actors. It’s an actual case, with actual transcripts, and actual lives attached to it’s heartbreaking storyline.
